Novenas

Nine days of persevering prayer

Novena to the Holy Spirit

The Novena to the Holy Spirit is considered the oldest novena in Christendom, as it dates back to the nine days that the Apostles, gathered with Mary in the Upper Room, spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost. It is traditionally prayed during those same nine days, asking for the renewal of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Each day meditates on an aspect of the Spirit's action and concludes with its own invocation.

First Day — The Promise of the Spirit

Jesus promised His disciples that He would not leave them orphans. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Father and the Son, sent to guide the Church into all truth. On this first day, we open our hearts to receive this promise.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. O Lord, who by the light of the Holy Spirit didst instruct the hearts of Thy faithful, grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things and evermore to rejoice in His consolation. Send forth upon us, O Lord, Thy seven gifts. Amen.

Second Day — The Gift of Wisdom

Wisdom is the gift that enables us to contemplate the things of God and to judge all things in the light of eternity. By the gift of Wisdom, the Christian savors divine realities and orders his life according to the plan of God.

Come, Spirit of Wisdom, detach us from the things of earth and infuse in us the love and taste for the things of heaven. Grant us to contemplate the beauty of God and to aspire to eternal life, where we shall behold Him face to face. Amen.

Third Day — The Gift of Understanding

Understanding is the gift that illuminates the intellect to penetrate the truths of faith. It is not a matter of comprehending God with human reason, but of receiving an interior light that makes the revealed truths vivid and profound.

Come, Spirit of Understanding, illumine our intellect that we may comprehend the truths of the holy faith, the greatness of God, the dignity of our soul, and the beauty of virtue. Grant us to penetrate the divine mysteries. Amen.

Fourth Day — The Gift of Counsel

Counsel is the gift that helps us discern, in each concrete situation, what God expects of us. It is the light of the Spirit at the crossroads of life, when human wisdom is not enough to find the right path.

Come, Spirit of Counsel, help us to know and fulfill the will of God in every moment of our life. Guide our steps on the path of salvation and deliver us from the deceits of the world. Amen.

Fifth Day — The Gift of Fortitude

Fortitude is the gift that grants the Christian the courage to face the difficulties of life and the perseverance to carry the fight of faith to the end. It is by the fortitude of the Spirit that the martyrs gave their lives and the saints persevered.

Come, Spirit of Fortitude, sustain our weakness, grant us courage in tribulations and constancy in the practice of good. Help us to overcome all temptations and to bear with patience the sufferings of this life. Amen.

Sixth Day — The Gift of Knowledge

Knowledge is the gift by which we understand creatures in their relation to God. All that exists speaks of the Creator. By the gift of Knowledge, the Christian discovers in created things traces of divine love and learns to use them as stepping stones to God.

Come, Spirit of Knowledge, grant us to know created things as the work of Thy hands and to use them for Thy glory and the salvation of our souls. Teach us to see in all things the presence of God. Amen.

Seventh Day — The Gift of Piety

Piety is the gift that enables us to recognize God as a loving Father and inspires us to treat Him with the tenderness and trust of children. By the gift of Piety, the human heart grows tender before God and is moved by the needs of neighbor.

Come, Spirit of Piety, grant us a filial heart toward God, our Father, and a fraternal heart toward all human beings, our brothers and sisters. Inspire in us tenderness, mercy, and zeal for Thy honor. Amen.

Eighth Day — The Gift of Fear of the Lord

Fear of the Lord is not terror, but reverent respect before the greatness and holiness of God. It is the gift that makes us fear offending the One who loves us infinitely and preserves us from sin through awareness of our frailty.

Come, Spirit of Fear of the Lord, penetrate our hearts with a loving reverence for Thee. Preserve us from all sin and grant us to walk always in Thy holy fear, which is the beginning of wisdom. Amen.

Ninth Day — The Coming of the Holy Spirit

On this final day, we recall the event of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and upon Mary, filling them with grace and power. We ask that the same Spirit renew all His gifts in us and make us courageous witnesses of the Gospel.

Come, Holy Spirit, renew in us all Thy gifts. Fill our hearts with Thy love, illumine our intellect, strengthen our will. Make us instruments of Thy peace and faithful witnesses of the Risen Christ, now and forever. Amen.

Closing Prayer — To Be Prayed Every Day

O God, who didst instruct the hearts of Thy faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things and evermore to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Novena to St. Joseph

The Novena to St. Joseph is a devotion practiced in preparation for the Solemnity of St. Joseph (March 19) or for the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker (May 1), and may also be prayed at any time for special needs. Each day meditates on a virtue of the glorious Patriarch, inviting us to imitate his example of holy life.

First Day — Obedience

St. Joseph is a model of obedience to the will of God. When the angel revealed to him in a dream the mystery of the Incarnation, Joseph obeyed without hesitation, welcoming Mary and the Child Jesus. His obedience was not blind, but luminous: it was born of total trust in the God who called him.

Glorious St. Joseph, who obeyed promptly the will of God in all the circumstances of your life, obtain for us the grace of a ready and joyful obedience to the divine designs. May we know how, like you, to say yes to the Lord even when we do not understand His ways. Amen.

Second Day — Humility

St. Joseph, a descendant of the royal house of David, lived as a simple carpenter in Nazareth. He sought neither honors nor recognition. His humility was the fertile ground where God planted the greatest mysteries of salvation. The humble are exalted by the Lord.

Most humble St. Joseph, who lived hidden from the eyes of the world to serve the King of kings, teach us true humility. Free us from vanity and pride, and help us understand that greatness lies in serving God and neighbor. Amen.

Third Day — Purity

St. Joseph was chosen to be the spouse of the Virgin Mary and the guardian of the Son of God. His purity of heart made him worthy of such a great mission. The pure heart is one that seeks God above all things and sees in every creature a reflection of the Creator.

Most chaste St. Joseph, lily of purity, who were chosen by God to guard the Virgin of virgins, purify our hearts from every disordered attachment. Obtain for us the grace to love God with an undivided heart. Amen.

Fourth Day — Fortitude

St. Joseph demonstrated heroic fortitude in protecting the Holy Family from the persecution of Herod, undertaking the flight to Egypt in the dead of night, facing the unknown with unwavering faith. His strength was not rigidity, but loving firmness in the service of those God had entrusted to him.

Most valiant St. Joseph, protector of the Holy Family, strengthen us in tribulations and difficulties of life. Grant us courage to face trials and perseverance never to abandon the path of good. Be our support in hours of weakness. Amen.

Fifth Day — Work

St. Joseph sanctified daily work in his carpenter's workshop. By the sweat of his brow he sustained Jesus and Mary, dignifying every form of honest labor. Work, united to prayer, becomes an offering pleasing to God and a path to sanctification.

St. Joseph the Worker, model of all laborers, teach us to sanctify our daily work, offering it to God as prayer. Obtain dignified employment for the unemployed and justice for the exploited. Bless our hands and our labors. Amen.

Sixth Day — Fatherhood

St. Joseph exercised fatherhood in a unique manner: he was the foster father of the Son of God. He did not beget Jesus according to the flesh, but loved, educated, and protected Him with total devotion. Joseph teaches us that true fatherhood is a gift of self — it is presence, care, and faithful love.

St. Joseph, loving father of Jesus, protect all families. Teach fathers to exercise their mission with tenderness and responsibility. Support orphans, the abandoned, and all who lack a fatherly presence. Be a father to us all. Amen.

Seventh Day — Silence

The Gospel records no words of St. Joseph. His silence is not absence, but contemplative presence. In silence, Joseph heard the voice of God, discerned His will, and acted with promptness. The silence of Joseph is a school of prayer and listening.

Silent St. Joseph, who in the stillness of your heart heard the voice of God, teach us the value of silence and prayer. Amid the noise of the world, help us find spaces of quiet where we may hear the Lord and discern His will. Amen.

Eighth Day — Faith

St. Joseph believed without seeing. He accepted the mystery of the Incarnation trusting solely in the word of the angel. His faith was tested by the poverty of Bethlehem, the flight to Egypt, and the hidden life in Nazareth. At no point did Joseph doubt: he walked in darkness holding the hand of God.

Most faithful St. Joseph, who believed in the word of God even in the darkness, strengthen our faith. In moments of doubt and trial, help us to trust in the Lord as you trusted. May our faith be firm, living, and active through charity. Amen.

Ninth Day — Protection

St. Joseph is invoked as Patron of the Universal Church, Terror of demons, Support of the needy. He who protected the Child Jesus continues to protect the Mystical Body of Christ. In these final days of the novena, we entrust to St. Joseph all our needs and those of Holy Church.

Glorious St. Joseph, patron of the Universal Church, extend over us your protective mantle. Defend Holy Church from all dangers, protect families, support the afflicted, assist the dying. Intercede for all our needs before Jesus and Mary. Amen.

Closing Prayer — To Be Prayed Every Day

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our tribulation. Having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse, we now confidently ask for thy protection as well. By that sacred bond of charity which united thee to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by the paternal love with which thou didst embrace the Child Jesus, we humbly beseech thee to look graciously upon the inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased with His Blood, and with thy power and strength to assist us in our necessities. Amen.
