Triduums and Novenas to St. Joseph

Prepare for the feasts of St. Joseph or make your special petitions through triduums and novenas.

About Triduums and Novenas

Triduums (three days) and novenas (nine days) are ancient devotional practices of the Catholic Church, during which special prayers are offered over a set period with a specific intention. They are privileged moments of spiritual preparation and fervent supplication.

Triduums to St. Joseph are especially recommended for the preparation of the saint's feasts (March 19 and May 1), while novenas may be prayed at any time of year for special petitions or to grow in devotion to the glorious Patriarch.

Triduum for the Feast of St. Joseph (March 16, 17, and 18)

First Day — March 16

St. Joseph, Model of Faith

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer:
O glorious St. Joseph, during these three days we wish to prepare our hearts to celebrate your feast worthily. Open our souls to divine grace and help us to grow in faith, hope, and charity.

Reflection:
St. Joseph is a perfect model of faith. Without questioning the divine designs, he accepted being the spouse of Mary and foster father of Jesus. His faith was tested in difficult hours: at the moment of the Annunciation, during the journey to Bethlehem, in the flight to Egypt. In all things, St. Joseph trusted in God.

Prayer:
St. Joseph, model of unshakable faith, teach us to trust in God even when we do not understand His designs. Grant that our faith may be firm in tribulations and constant in daily life. Obtain for us the grace to accept always the divine will with the same promptness with which you accepted it. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

St. Joseph, terror of demons, pray for us!

Second Day — March 17

St. Joseph, Model of Hope

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer:
O glorious St. Joseph, we continue our preparation for your feast by meditating on your unshakable hope. Teach us to hope always in God, even in the darkest hours.

Reflection:
The life of St. Joseph was marked by human uncertainties, but he always maintained his hope in God. When he found no lodging in Bethlehem, when he had to flee to Egypt, when he lost Jesus in the Temple — in all things he hoped in divine Providence.

Prayer:
St. Joseph, model of Christian hope, teach us never to lose heart in the face of life's difficulties. Grant that our hope may always be grounded in God and not in the passing things of this world. Intercede for us that we may have the certainty that God never abandons those who trust in Him. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

St. Joseph, support of Christians, pray for us!

Third Day — March 18

St. Joseph, Model of Charity

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer:
O glorious St. Joseph, on this final day of preparation, we contemplate your love for God and neighbor. Teach us to love as you loved Jesus and Mary.

Reflection:
St. Joseph loved in a pure and selfless manner. His love for Mary was most chaste and respectful. His love for Jesus was paternal and devoted. He worked tirelessly to sustain the Holy Family and protect them from every danger.

Prayer:
St. Joseph, model of perfect charity, teach us to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. Grant that our love may be generous, pure, and selfless like yours. Intercede for our families that the love of Christ may reign in our homes. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

St. Joseph, protector of families, pray for us!

O glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Mary and foster father of Jesus, I venerate you as protector of the Holy Family and of the Universal Church. Filled with trust in your powerful intercession, I begin this novena to honor you and obtain your graces.

You who were a faithful collaborator in the work of Redemption, obtain for me the grace to be also faithful to my Christian duties. Protect me from all evil and obtain the graces I need, especially [state your intention].

St. Joseph, my dear protector, I consecrate myself to you and ask that you receive me under your paternal protection. Amen.

First Day — St. Joseph, Descendant of David

Reflection: St. Joseph belonged to the royal lineage of David, yet he lived humbly as a carpenter. His nobility lay in virtue, not in earthly riches.

Prayer: St. Joseph, illustrious descendant of David, teach us that true nobility consists in the practice of Christian virtues. Grant that we may despise the vanities of the world and seek only the glory of God.

Second Day — St. Joseph, Just Man

Reflection: Sacred Scripture presents St. Joseph as a "just man." His justice was perfect: toward God, toward himself, and toward neighbor.

Worker's Prayer

St. Joseph the Worker, model of all laborers, you who with your own hands sustained the Holy Family, teach us to work with honesty and dedication.

Grant that our work may always be a prayer, a way of collaborating with God in building a better world. Protect all workers, artisans, professionals, and laborers of every kind.

Obtain for us dignified employment for those who need it, just wages to sustain our families, and the grace to see in our work a means of sanctification.

St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us and for all the workers of the world. Amen.
