Jesus Is Condemned to Death
"Then Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified" (Jn 19:16)
R. Because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
"Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus scourged, handed Him over to be crucified." (Mk 15:15)
O my Jesus, how the paternal heart of St. Joseph must have ached to contemplate this moment! He who protected You from the wrath of Herod when You were but a helpless infant now sees You unjustly condemned to the cruelest death.
St. Joseph, who knew Your innocence from the first moment, who watched You grow in wisdom and grace, now contemplates human injustice prevailing over truth. Pilate, knowing Your innocence, yields to the pressure of the crowd and condemns You.
O holy Patriarch, you who always trusted in divine Providence even in the most difficult moments, teach us to accept the injustices of life with the same serenity with which Jesus accepts this condemnation. He could defend Himself, He could use His divine power, but He chooses silence and obedience to the will of the Father.
How it must have moved your paternal heart to see Jesus accept with meekness this unjust sentence! You, who were always His earthly protector, now understand that the supreme moment has come when Jesus must fulfill His mission as Savior of humanity.
How many times do we also condemn Jesus in our lives? Every time we choose sin over virtue, every time we prefer the world to God, every time we deny our Lord out of cowardice or human interest.
St. Joseph teaches us that even in the face of the greatest injustices, we must maintain our unwavering faith in divine justice. He shows us that God can bring good even from apparent evil, for from this unjust condemnation will be born the salvation of all humanity.
O Jesus, unjustly condemned by Pilate, forgive us for all the times we condemn You anew through our sins. St. Joseph, you who contemplated this injustice with sorrow, intercede for us that we may have the strength to accept the trials of life with patience and faith.
Grant us the grace never to condemn You again through sin, but always to choose You as our King and Lord. May we, like You, accept the will of God even when we do not fully understand it.
St. Joseph, model of justice and patience, pray for us! Amen.
Hoje me proponho a aceitar com paciência alguma contrariedade ou injustiça, unindo meu sofrimento ao de Jesus condemned.
V. Have mercy on us, O Lord.
